Education in Malawi - One Woman's Journey to Help Others with Ponelo Kongola

Ponelo Kalonga has lived in poverty. She knows it firsthand. Now thirty years old, Ponelo is committed to reforming education for girls in central and southern Malawi. Ponelo's initiative, Save the Village Youth Foundation, is devoted to help young girls remain in school. Childhood marriages, pregnancy, poverty and cultural discrimination are everyday occurrences, and she is working to help change the lives of many young girls through education and informed decisions.

Ponelo_984354626.jpgMy name is Ponelo Kalonga, I am 30 years old. I was born and raised in Malawi. I am committed to reforming girls’ education in the southern and central part of  Malawi. I have a particular interest in improving the accessibility of schooling to  disadvantaged young girls including those who got pregnant and dropped out of school through my Initiative called Save the Village Youth Foundation. (SVYF). I was raised by a single mother who has confronted homelessness and poverty, and as a result of my own experiences, I am familiar with the despair and frustration endemic to young women struggling to survive. I am very convinced that increasing individuals' access to girls education can make the difference between despondency and hope.
