Once I've Gone with Ian Dibb

While poking around on Twitter, Jane found Ian Dibb. Ian is the creator of Once I’ve Gone. Ian agreed to come on the show to talk about his secure app that is a digital holding space for all of your important information for your loved ones, Once You’ve Gone. The idea came to him after losing both his mum and sister within the space of a couple years. Ian describes the app as a forward thinking family tree. As Ian so eloquently states in the interview; “Being prepared for death means you live the best life you possibly can.”

Ian_Dibb_3_594678486.jpegMy life changed dramatically when both my mother and my sister passed away in the space of two years. My sister was a teacher and my mother a GP. I will never forget the day that my mother was diagnosed with small cell cancer, after she had been suffering from back pain for 6 months. Sadly, cancer will affect 1 in 2 of us, but most of us believe that it won’t happen to us, and as a result don’t prepare for it. My mother was only 57 when she died.

Neither my sister or mother had spoken with our family about what they would like to happen in the event of their deaths, but this is not unusual. Most of us will not have these conversations with those we love.  The result of this was that we were left asking questions about the type of funerals they would have wanted, at a time that we were all struggling with the grief of losing a loved one.

Ian_Dibb_2_469224913.jpgWe were also left to deal with their estates in the days, weeks and months following their deaths. As a family we went through filing cabinets and shoe boxes to deal with the years of paperwork that many of us have. To this day, I am not 100% sure I found all of their polices, insurances and savings. People don’t keep their affairs up to date, and as a result there is over £15bn in unclaimed assets in the UK alone. I would hate to think about what this figure would be internationally.

My aim in founding Once I’ve Gone was to make life that little bit easier for those left behind. Our industry leading platform makes it easy for you to record details of your important personal, legal and financial information that your family will need. You can upload and store digital copies of important documents, photos, videos, anything you want to share. All this information is securely stored and made available to your Trusted Contacts once you’ve gone.

It’s a fantastic gift to your family at the time they need it most. We can’t remove the pain of losing a loved one, but we can make it easier to ensure people get a send-off that celebrates their lives.
