Deonna Kelli Sayed on The Farkas Files

Paranormal investigator and researcher Deonna Kelli Sayed  wrote her latest book to reveal how and why the public fascination with spirits started. She interviewed ghost hunters, religious figures, scientists, academics, and cast members of the popular TV shows Ghost Hunters and Paranormal State, and offers compelling insight into what our fixation on ghostly activity says about American culture. Paranormal Obsession also highlights the author’s paranormal group’s investigation of the USS North Carolina, the most haunted battleship in the United States.

Deonna Kelli Sayed’s new  book isn’t a collection of ghost stories. It is more about why people are so fascinated by ghosts in the first place.  Using  a “cultural studies” approach,  Obsession uses paranormal reality TV (mostly SyFy’s Ghost Hunters) as a springboard for discussion.  A discussion we will continue on this edition of The Farkas Files.

Deonna Kelli Sayed is an American-Muslim author, global citizen, and cultural commentator. Her first book, Paranormal Obsession: America’s Fascination with Ghosts & Hauntings, Spooks & Spirits, is a cultural studies discussion regarding the influence of paranormal reality TV in a post 9/11 American society. Her work is also featured in the groundbreaking anthology, Love, InshAllah: The Secret Love Lives of American-Muslim Women. Deonna’s second book, So You Want To Hunt Ghosts: A Down-To-Earth Guide (Llewellyn) will be released on October 2012.

Born in the rural American South and raised as a Southern Baptist, Deonna is now a Muslim. As a former UN spouse, she lived and traveled throughout the Muslim world, Central Asia, and Africa. Deonna’s work has appeared in Foreign Policy in Focus, and various international magazines. While in the Middle East, she wrote for two English language lifestyle magazines.

Why ghosts? people ask. Deonna replies, “Ghostly experiences provide profound insight into personal mythologies and collective cultural beliefs of good and evil, spirituality, history, and belonging. It is all about story and the experience. Americans have been to the moon and we are a superpower, but ghosts remain an unconquered frontier. The paranormal is ultimately about bending metaphysical boundaries.” She is actively involved with paranormal research and investigation. Deonna Kelli Sayed

Deonna knows a thing or two about boundaries. Her own identity is an intersection of spiritual, cultural, and now, supernatural frontiers. Her life experience suggests that boundaries are not limiting; they are not the point where one stops. Rather, they are the place where we begin to define ourselves. Boundaries are the locations of personal and political agency. They are crossing over sites.

In addition to paranormal investigation and writing, Deonna is an experienced public speaker. She also composes original music on the piano and detests yard work. If you want to be her friend, be prepared to make offerings of strong, hot coffee. Cream, no sugar.
